When Should You Visit the Emergency Department?

Visit the Emergency Department if you or your loved one is experiencing a critical, life-threatening medical issue or a serious mental health emergency.

Our emergency units are fully equipped to handle urgent situations such as:

  • Major accidents or trauma

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

  • Intense chest or abdominal pain

  • Symptoms of a stroke, like drooping of the face, weakness in one arm, or slurred speech

  • Fainting or sudden loss of consciousness

  • Heavy, uncontrolled bleeding

Mental Health Emergencies

Immediate mental health care may be needed if a person:

  • Is at risk of harming themselves or others

  • Is experiencing hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there)

  • Believes in things that are clearly not real

  • Is unable to perform basic self-care like eating, sleeping, bathing, or getting out of bed

  • Continues to struggle despite therapy, medication, or family support

Crisis intervention and suicide prevention services are also available.

Important Information

Please note that wait times in the Emergency Department depend on the severity of each case—not the order of arrival. Patients in critical condition are treated first.
